There is no shortage of attractions in Sydney – from iconic national landmarks to hidden back streets and bustling beaches, there’s always something to see.
Here are ten of the most unforgettable Sydney attractions that are musts on your itinerary.
1. Sydney Opera House
It goes without saying that Sydney Opera House is a must-see attraction. The iconic sail-like building has come to be the symbol of Australia all around the world. There are plenty of ways to see it – whether you simply want to walk around it, grab a drink at the famous Opera Bar, take a guided tour or even see a show.
2. Sydney Harbour Bridge
It’s hard to miss one of the world’s most famous bridges – Sydney Harbour Bridge – but if you really want to experience it you have to do the Bridge Climb. The most exhilarating way to see Sydney in all its glory, the bridge climb is one of the most popular attractions in the city.
Not for the faint hearted and certainly not an easy walk, it’s well worth the effort once you see the views from the top. There are a variety of different climbs including ones at night, dawn and twilight.
3. The Rocks
The popular and historic precinct of The Rocks is one of the most unique attractions in inner Sydney. Situated on the southern shore of Sydney Harbour, the unrivalled views of the iconic bridge and the beautiful waterfront- make it a hotspot for tourists and locals alike.
With an abundance of craft shops, restaurants and historic pubs, it’s easy to lose several hours just wandering and exploring.
4. Blue Mountains
Although it is a couple of hours drive (or leisurely train journey) outside of Sydney, it is definitely worth the visit. Easily done in a day trip – but you could happily spend a week there – the Blue Mountains are one of Australia’s most spectacular natural wonders.
From ancient aboriginal carvings and breathtaking views, no trip to Sydney is complete without a visit to the scenic Blue Mountains.
5. Bondi Beach
Easily in the top five most famous beaches in the world, Bondi Beach lives up to all the hype. As well as the endless white sand and clear Pacific waters that are just as amazing as in the travel brochures, the laidback vibe is what makes it what it is.
With open-air cafes, trendy boutiques and bustling bars – it’s so much more than just a beach.
6. Fort Denison
Situated in the centre of Sydney Harbour is the small island of Pinchgut, upon which sits former defensive facility, Fort Denison. Dating back to before European settlement, the island is now a popular tourist attraction with ferries running regular tourist trips over there. There’s a museum on the island and it’s also a popular place for wedding receptions.
7. Taronga Zoo
Zoos are always a fun day out no matter what age you are – and Taronga Zoo doesn’t disappoint. Dating back nearly 100 years, the zoo has become one of Sydney’s leading tourist attractions.
Located on the shores of Sydney Harbour you not only get to visit some incredible animals but you have the backdrop of Sydney’s famous skyline – talk about a perfect photo opportunity!
8. Powerhouse Museum
The Powerhouse Museum is Sydney’s home of science, technology, innovation and design. The building itself is incredible to see but you’ll be blown away with what’s inside. Home to over 400,000 artifacts, the museum has a huge number of exhibitions – many hands-on – with special events happening throughout the year.
9. Luna Park
For a fun day or night out, head to Luna Park – Sydney’s only waterfront theme park. Famous for its huge smiling mouth entrance (you’ll know it when you see it!), kids and kids at heart will have a great time on the rides and enjoying some candy floss in between.
10. Darling Harbour
Darling Harbour is where it all happens. Whether you want a fabulous night out with the girls, a romantic dinner with a loved one or simply want to take a leisurely stroll around – Darling Harbour caters for everyone.
There are over 40 restaurants, 30 bars and an endless list of attractions including theatres, parks, live music and shopping. You’ll no doubt find yourself here more than once during your stay.
